Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Psychiatric care for adults and older adults · Maryland & Washington, DC

Unwanted thoughts and repeated rituals can take up time and energy you would rather spend on your life. You can talk about these experiences in a respectful, nonjudgmental setting.

Novexa Behavioral Health serves adults ages 18 and older, including older adults. In-person appointments are available in Beltsville, Maryland, and Washington, DC, with telehealth throughout Maryland and DC.

OCD can take different forms

Obsessions are recurring unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause distress. Compulsions are repeated behaviors or mental rituals used to reduce that distress. Examples can include checking, washing, counting, seeking reassurance, or repeating actions until they feel right.

More than being organized

OCD is not simply a preference for cleanliness or order. Symptoms may feel difficult to resist, take substantial time, and interfere with relationships, responsibilities, and everyday activities. An evaluation can help distinguish OCD from other causes of intrusive thoughts or repetitive behaviors.

Psychiatric care at NBH

We explore your symptoms, their effect on your daily life, previous treatment, and any related anxiety or depression. Medication management may be part of your individualized plan. We review expected benefits, possible side effects, and progress over time.

The role of specialized therapy

Exposure and response prevention (ERP), a form of cognitive behavioral therapy, is an established treatment for OCD. NBH provides supportive psychotherapy during psychiatric visits; we can discuss working with a therapist trained in ERP for focused OCD treatment.

Your first appointment

You do not need to describe every distressing thought at once. We work with you to understand the patterns and what you want help changing. Bring your medication list and any history of therapy or medication treatment so we can plan appropriate next steps.
