Psychiatric care for adults and older adults · Maryland & Washington, DC
Difficulty sleeping can affect your energy, mood, and ability to get through the day. Understanding what is disrupting your sleep is the first step toward a useful care plan.
Novexa Behavioral Health serves adults ages 18 and older, including older adults. In-person appointments are available in Beltsville, Maryland, and Washington, DC, with telehealth throughout Maryland and DC.
When sleep needs attention
Sleep concerns can include trouble falling asleep, repeated awakenings, waking earlier than intended, or feeling unrefreshed. These difficulties may occur alongside anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, or changes in daily routines.
Looking beyond bedtime
We review your sleep pattern, mental health, medications, caffeine or alcohol use, pain, and physical health. Snoring, breathing pauses, or other symptoms may suggest a need for medical or sleep-specialist evaluation. Psychiatric care addresses mental health factors and does not replace a sleep study or treatment for sleep apnea.
Our approach at NBH
We assess whether psychiatric symptoms are contributing to sleep difficulties and discuss strategies to address them. Care may include medication review, treatment of a related mental health condition, supportive psychotherapy, and practical changes to sleep routines. If medication is appropriate, we discuss benefits, risks, and monitoring.
The role of CBT-I
Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is a recommended first treatment for long-term insomnia. It addresses patterns that keep sleep problems going. We can discuss referral to a clinician who provides CBT-I; general sleep tips alone may not be enough for persistent insomnia.
Preparing for your visit
A brief sleep diary can help: note bedtimes, wake times, awakenings, naps, and how you feel during the day. Bring a list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements. For older adults, we pay particular attention to medication effects and safety.
