Understanding the conditions

Schizophrenia can affect thinking, perception, motivation, and daily functioning. Symptoms may include hearing or seeing things others do not, strongly held beliefs that others do not share, or difficulty organizing thoughts. Schizoaffective disorder includes psychotic symptoms alongside significant mood episodes, such as depression or mania.

A careful psychiatric evaluation

We review current symptoms, the pattern over time, past diagnoses, medication history, and physical health. We also consider other possible contributors. Understanding the relationship between mood changes and psychotic symptoms helps guide diagnosis and treatment.

Medication management and follow-up

Medication can be an important part of treatment. We discuss options, monitor response and side effects, and review any recommended health checks. Follow-up visits address concerns such as sedation, restlessness, movement symptoms, and changes in daily functioning.

Support beyond medication

Supportive psychotherapy during visits can help address coping, routines, and treatment goals. With your permission, we can involve trusted supports and collaborate with therapists or other providers. Some people may also benefit from specialized community services or a higher level of care.

Planning for changes in symptoms

We discuss early warning signs and when additional support is needed. If symptoms suddenly worsen, you feel unable to stay safe, or there is severe confusion or immediate danger, seek urgent assessment. An outpatient appointment should not delay emergency care.
