Understanding bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder involves episodes of depression and mania or hypomania. During an elevated mood episode, someone may have unusually high energy, racing thoughts, increased irritability, impulsive decisions, or a reduced need for sleep. Depressive episodes may involve low mood, fatigue, and loss of interest.
Why a detailed history matters
Bipolar disorder is more than ordinary mood changes. We review the timing and duration of episodes, prior diagnoses, treatment responses, sleep patterns, substance use, and family history. Understanding both depressive and elevated mood symptoms helps guide treatment.
Our approach to ongoing care
NBH provides psychiatric evaluations and medication management. We discuss options based on your history and current symptoms, explain possible benefits and risks, and arrange appropriate monitoring. Supportive psychotherapy during visits can address coping, daily routines, and early warning signs.
Working toward stability
Regular follow-up helps us assess mood, sleep, daily functioning, and side effects. We can coordinate with your therapist or primary care provider with your permission. A plan may also include identifying signs that symptoms are returning and deciding when to seek additional help.
When more urgent support is needed
Markedly reduced sleep with escalating energy, unsafe behavior, severe confusion, or thoughts of self-harm warrant prompt assessment. Contact emergency services when there is immediate danger. Outpatient appointments do not replace emergency care.
